At Gas Malaysia, we are committed towards ensuring the safety of our stakeholders and the wider communities through the implementation of safety standards and procedures. Our comprehensive standards and procedures focus on key areas such as pipeline design, operations & maintenance, safety awareness programmes and emergency response readiness.

1. Pipeline Design & Construction Standards

We use high-grade materials in compliance to international standards, including steel and polyethylene, to construct our pipelines, which are designed with high safety factor and installed underground at safe depths. The pipes are designed with special coating and protected with a cathodic protection system to enhance durability and resistance to corrosion. In addition, valves are strategically located within the pipeline infrastructure to control the gas flow in cases of emergencies.

Our gas pipeline operates at low to medium pressure, typically ranging from 3.5barg to 18barg, in contrast to the high-pressure transmission pipelines. All pipelines are designed in accordance with stringent Class 4 safety factor.

All gas facilities are constructed and commissioned with approval obtained from Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) and Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). We place strong emphasis on the competency of our staff and contractors through continuous training and strict adherence to industry standards, ensuring that all work related to our gas pipeline infrastructure is carried out safely and professional manner.

2. Operations & Maintenance

Gas Malaysia conducts daily patrols along its pipeline infrastructure to proactively identify and address potential safety hazards, supervising 3rd Party works, structured inspections of all critical equipment and perform preventive maintenances to ensure the integrity of our pipeline infrastructure.

With three Regional Offices and nine Branch Offices strategically located within our supply areas, we are well-positioned to respond to gas related emergencies. Our response efforts are further strengthened through close coordination between Operations Control Centre (OCC) and our on- call personnel, ensuring timely and effective action in emergency situations

3. 24/7 Monitoring & Leak Detection

Gas Malaysia operates a 24/7 Operation Control Centre (OCC) where it serves as the nerve centre that continuously monitors pipeline pressure in real time, providing early indications of potential leaks using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system in ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of natural gas across Peninsular Malaysia. Among others, the OCC is responsible for managing and providing appropriate response during emergencies, as well as attending to other enquiries and complaints.

As a leak detection measure, mercaptan (a distinctive odorant) is added to our natural gas distribution network, making it easily detectable by the public in the event of a leak.

4. Public Awareness

To ensure the public is well-informed, we place visible pipeline signboards and markers at key locations along our pipelines that clearly display a toll-free emergency contact number, enabling the public to report any suspicious activities or incidents promptly.

Our “Call Before You Dig” programme encourages individuals and contractors to reach out to Gas Malaysia before beginning any excavation work. Additionally, we conduct regular safety seminars with 3rd party contractors, other utility companies and local authorities to ensure that there is a clear line of communication, coordination and compliance to relevant requirements.

We also conduct a tri-party engagement between our contractors and government authority to ensure alignment with safety standards, regulatory compliance and effective coordination during pipeline development projects.

5. Emergency Preparedness

We engage closely with BOMBA (Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia) and other local authorities to conduct emergency drills and simulations in order to enhance preparedness as well as ensure a swift response in any gas related emergency situation.

Gas Malaysia has in place a comprehensive Business Continuity Management (BCM) framework to ensure operational resilience and minimise disruption in the event of a crisis. This framework outlines structured response strategies, recovery procedures and proactive risk mitigation measures.

6. Regulatory Compliance & Oversight

Gas Malaysia adheres strictly to the Gas Supply Act and its related legislations. In addition, Gas Malaysia also complies with any regulations set by our regulator Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) and relevant government agencies, such as Local Councils, Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR), Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH).

At Gas Malaysia, we are dedicated towards maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability. By implementing these safety measures, we continue to protect our communities and the environment while delivering safe, reliable and efficient natural gas services across Peninsular Malaysia.
